LinkedIn: No More Excuses

If you’re at all invested in your career, you really should be on LinkedIn. The first reaction I get from most of my clients is that “LinkedIn is only used as an advertisement for your next job.”  Think again.

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network in over 200 countries. The site makes it easy to have an account that provides immediate real value. Linking in with the right motives and the right content will reap phenomenal benefits.

Here are my three biggest points of reason:

  1. Do it for others. You offer your employer and staff a great opportunity to get to know you and your field of expertise, skill level and other personal and professional competencies about you, all of which you can easily control. What better way for your staff during a promotion or transition to get to know you quickly?
  1. Gain immediate relevance. This is a generational resource that makes you relevant and noteworthy. Think about it… if your employer, peers or staff don’t find you on LinkedIn, they may view you as irrelevant or old-school, regardless of your age.
  1. Educate yourself for career advancement. I encourage clients to search and then engage with others in company positions that they would like to be in. LinkedIn makes it very easy to search.

One more tip:  once you’ve completed your profile, add your LinkedIn address to your email signature block. In this way, you make access to your professional credentials easy for everyone.

Okay, one last word of advice: Don’t be worried about getting bombarded with emails from LinkedIn.  Go to Privacy & Settings (hover over your profile picture in the upper right corner) > Communications > Set the frequency of emails. From there, you can change the preferences for all types of email notifications.

No more excuses. I will be waiting for your invitation to LinkIn with you.
